2nd-  2.82" from showers and thundershowers ending late afternoon. Cove
         Lake's level rose to within 6 inches of the top of our sea wall - the
         highest it has been in many months.
7th-   0.21 from a thundershower 2:15-3:15 p.m.
8th-   Trace 1 pm
9th-   Trace 3pm (with close thunder to the west) and another trace at 7 p.m.
10th- 1.75" of which 1.12" fell 1:30-2:14 p.m. & another 0.63" 3:00-3:20 p.m.

This was the second hottest August in history (period of record 1890-2007) at TIA.

         Brighthouse cable knocked out a couple of hours.

14th-  0.47, most of it falling in a heavy shower 4:10 to 4:40 p.m.
         An observer in Masaryktown had 4.25" this afternoon.
16th- 1.00" of which 0.88" fell in one hour (5:18-6:18 p.m.) with strong wind
         and close lightning.

18th-  0.00 Distant p.m. thunder
19th-  Trace 8:30 p.m Close thunder 2-3 p.m. from a storm in Town n Country
          east of Webb Rd.
20th-  0.57" from a late morning thundershower

22nd- 0.85" from a downpour 7:25-8:00 p.m. with just a little thunder. 0.58"
          fell in 15 minutes.
          We took pictures over about 7 minutes of a funnel cloud a few miles
          east of The Cove, probably over Town n Country. It never reached the
          ground. Just as it dissipated, the skies opened up here.
24th-  0.16" in a late morning gentle rain.
25th-  0.66" from a 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. thundershower.
28th- Trace around noon. Plenty of lightning nearby to the east and
          southeast.
29th- .08" 10-11 a.m. Also, .19" 10-10:30 p.m. with the full moon shining
         brightly through the whole event.
31st-  2.14" of which .40" fell near dawn, .62" 1:30-3 p.m., 1.05" 5-6 p.m.
         and .07" before midnight.

JUNE
1st & 2nd-  3.80" The center of Tropical Depression Barry moved inland from the Gulf around noon June 2 near Hernando Beach, accompanied by thunderstorms, and bringing an end (at least temporarily) to our severe drought. The level of Cove lake rose 9 inches. Had all the rain run off into the lake, it would have risen about 19 inches, indicating that over half the rain soaked into the ground.
13th-  0.55" with 0.46" falling during a thundershower 1-2 a.m. and 0.09" in a shower 11-11:30 a.m.

9th- 1.38" fell 7-10 a.m. from a thundershower moving rapidly inland from the Gulf.

Total rainfall in May was 1.75"

APRIL
8-9th-  0.43" fell during the night, with lightning and thunder. Over an inch was reported near Hillsborough and Memorial.
27th-  0.28"

MARCH
No rain between February 26th and March 21st.
March rainfall total was a trace.

FEBRUARY
3rd- 4 7.27" Heavy thunderstorms beginning mid-morning Feb. 3, finally ending as light showers 10 a.m. Feb. 4. Cove Lake was above flood stage late afternoon into the night of Feb. 3. The National Weather Service reports 8.29 inches fell in 24 hours at Tampa Int'l Airport February 3-4th. This was the fourth biggest 24-hour rainfall in history, and the only rain exceeding 5.50 inches in any month from October through April. The only larger rains were 9.07" 7/29/60, 9.88" 6/23/1945 and 11.45" 5/8/1979.

Total for 2005 45.8 inches. Tampa Int'l Airpor had only 38.95 inches, or 5.82 inches below its normal of 44.77"
Retired meteorologist Roy Leep, now living in University Village (Lutz), fared much better, with 64.8" for the year. Most summers are driest near the Bay and Gulf, and wetter several miles inland.

NOVEMBER

21st- 0.23" fell between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. with occasional thunder and a strong cold frontal passage.

2nd-  0.28" from a thundershower around 4 p.m.

5th-   0.04" from the outskirts of tropical storm Tammy, near the Space Coast
7th-   2.75" most of which fell before dawn. Occasional thunder.
8th-   0.55"
9th through 21st - none
22nd-  0.06" from a shower at 4 p.m. Probably dry at the south end of The Cove, along Longboat.
23rd/24th- 1.25" with strong winds overnight, from Hurricane Wilma. Much colder weather followed Wilma, marking the end of our extended summer-like weather.

SEPTEMBER
1st- Trace
2nd- 0.35" most fell in a heavy shower around 1 p.m.
7th- 0.07" brief afternoon shower, remotely associated with Hurricane Ophelia.
8-19th-  No rain. The record July-August drought at the airport continued through the 20th, as only 0.02" has fallen there so far this month.
20th- 0.20" .16" fell in 5 minutes (3:03-3:08 p.m.), distant thunder
21st-  0.72" Most of it fell during a brief heavy thunderstorm 4-5 p.m. This was from the outer fringes of Hurricane Rita.
23rd- 0.34" from drizzle much of the day and a hard shower around 6 p.m.
28th- Trace around 5 p.m. from the fringe of heavy showers over Pinellas County.
24th--27th- no rain
29th- 0.16" around 4 p.m.
September total 1.84."
The National Weather Service stated that this July-August-September was the driest and hottest in the 115 year history of Tampa (Airport). Only 0.79" fell at the airport, tying with 1910 for the driest September in history. Also, the July-September total rainfall of 8.43" was FAR less than the previous record of 11.91" in 1944.
So if your AC and lawn-watering bills were high, there is a reason.

AUGUST
6th- 0.31" 4 to 4:45 p.m. and 0.40" more from another t-shower 5:40 to 6:20 p.m. First rain of the month. Little wind here, but gusts to 62 mph at MacDill AFB.  Total so far today 0.71"
7th- 0.90" of which 0.83" fell in 20 minutes (2-2:30 p.m.)
8th- 0.03" (there may be more later)
13th- Trace 3-3:30 p.m., but thunderstorms nearby for the last three afternoons.
14th-  0.06" 2-3 p.m., but much heavier rain with lots of cloud-ground lightning just north of here.
15th-  0.08" 3:30-4:15 p.m. On the edge of a storm in Carrollwood to downtown Tampa
16th- 0.01" around 5 p.m. Heavy shower NE-N of here
17th- 0.57" Fell between 1 and 1:45 a.m. with lots of close lightning. Sprinkles around 6 p.m.
18th- Trace 5 p.m. Thunderstorms to the SW, then W, N, SE, and S during the afternoon

Barry Goldsmith of the National Weather Service stated that this July and August combined were the driest and hottest pair of months in history. No wonder our lawn-watering and air conditioning bills were high!
